Base Salary The base salary of beginning foreign teachers is 6,000 CNY per month. Prior experience or a post-graduate degree in a teaching-related field is grounds for offering a higher initial base salary. Every six months, teachers will be given a performance review. Those who satisfactorily meet Langston’s standards will receive a salary increase of 50 to 500 CNY depending on performance. Poor performance will result in salary reductions between 50 and 500 CNY. Teacher performance will be evaluated using the following criteria: classroom observations, student surveys, appearance, punctuality, and overall attitude towards Langston’s students and staff (examples: are you friendly to students that talk with you outside of class? Do you actively participate in Langston marketing events?). Work Schedule and Overtime Langston teachers are expected to work up to a 40-hour, five-day week. However, teaching hours are limited 80 hours per month. Teaching hours consist of both adult and children’s classes. The ratio of adult and children’s classes assigned to a given teacher will be determined by Langston and is not negotiable. In addition, Langston does not guarantee a teaching schedule that is balanced in regards to other teachers. If a teacher is given more than 80 class hours in one month, he/she will receive 100 CNY per class hour in overtime pay. If a teacher is asked to teach on his/her day off, 100 CNY per teaching hour will be paid in overtime pay. Marketing Events Langston teachers are normally required to participate in several marketing events each week. Marketing events where a teacher is asked to prepare and give a lesson or speech will be partially counted as teaching hours (the time the teacher actually spends speaking or teaching will be counted as teaching time, not the entire marketing event). Taxes Chinese government taxes will be deducted from foreign teacher salaries. Taxes are calculated in the following way: Salary – 4,800 CNY = Taxable Income
If you make 6,500 CNY your taxes will be calculated as follows: [(6,500 – 4,800) x 10%] – 25 = 145 CNY in Tax One-Year Contract Completion Bonus Upon the satisfactory completion of a one-year contract teachers will receive a 6,000 CNY contract-completion bonus. Teachers who do not stay until the end of their contract will forfeit 100 percent of this bonus. Even under extraordinary circumstances (sickness, death in family, etc.) Langston will give neither a full or prorated year-end bonus if the contracted year is not completed. Housing Langston provides foreign teachers with a furnished, shared apartment. Most of our places are three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments. Teachers are given a private bedroom. Basic linens and kitchen supplies are provided for newly arriving teachers. Teachers who wish to rent their own apartment are given a 900 CNY per month housing stipend. If a teacher moves out of Langston housing in the middle of the month the stipend will not be provided until payday for the following month (for example, if you move out on April 17th, you will not receive your first housing stipend payment until June 8th). In Langston apartments, teachers are required to pay all water, gas, electricity, phone and internet fees. Teachers sharing Langston apartments are to divide the above bills between themselves. Pay Day All full-time Langston employees are paid on the 8th of each month after one in the afternoon. For example, payment for March 1st through March 31st will be given on April 8th. If the 8th falls on a Saturday or Sunday, teachers will be paid the following Monday. Paid Vacation Langston teachers are given the following number of work days off for Chinese national holidays: • Chinese Lunar New Year – 5 days • Chinese Labor Day – 1 day • Chinese National Day – 3 days • Thanksgiving Day – 1 day • Christmas – 1 day • New Years – 1 day In addition, teachers are given 10 work days per year of paid leave. These accumulate at the rate of one day per month for the first ten months. New teachers are allowed to redeem paid vacation days only after working for three months. Paid leave must be used before the end of each one-year contract period and cannot be exchanged for cash. In order to redeem paid leave, teachers must submit a paid-vacation application form (attached) at least one month in advance. Paid leave will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are denied paid vacation because other teachers have already applied, you will be offered alternate dates. Teachers are given one additional day of paid leave for each additional year worked. For example, a teacher signing a contract for his/her second year at Langston would receive 11 days of paid leave. Langston does not offer sick leave. A teacher that is sick and doesn’t wish to have missed days deducted from his/her monthly salary may use paid leave days. Teachers that have not yet worked at Langston for six months may choose to defer salary deductions in order to redeem paid vacation for missed days at the six month mark. If You are Late Teachers that arrive late to class are fined 200 CNY. A teacher that misses one or more classes due to negligence will be fined 200 CNY per hour missed. Z-Visa, Foreign Expert Card, and Resident Permit While preparing to work at Langston the following three steps must be taken in order to process your entry visa (Z Visa) as well as your foreign expert card and residence permit: For you Z-Visa we first must: 1. Process your Foreign Work Permit. For your Foreign Work Permit we will need: • a scanned copy of your passport. • a resume outlining your detailed work history and education. • a scanned copy of a recent passport-style photo. • a recent health exam notarized (every page) by a local notary, your secretary of state (the governing body of your state or province), and finally by a Chinese embassy or consulate in your home country (we will send you the form for your doctor to fill out). Make sure that each and every page is notarized or the Chinese embassy or consulate will not notarize the document for you. • a signed Foreign Affairs Bureau work contract (we will e-mail this to you; you will need to sign it, scan it and e-mail it back to us). If you have family members accompanying you we will need the following: • marriage certificate (notarized by a by notary, state or provincial level secretary of state, and the Chinese embassy or consulate in your home country). Make sure that each and every page is notarized or the Chinese embassy or consulate will not notarize the document for you. • Birth certificates of children that will be accompanying you (notarized by a by notary, state or provincial level secretary of state, and the Chinese embassy or consulate in your home country). Make sure that each and every page is notarized or the Chinese embassy or consulate will not notarize the document for you. For those processing the above documents in the US, we’ve found that the easiest visa agencies to use are the ones located in Houston, Texas. This is due to the fact that Chinese visa policy varies from consulate to consulate and embassy to embassy. Policies are applied differently in different places and in our experience Houston, Texas is the most lenient consulate in the States. An excellent agency to use based in Houston is www.mychinavisa.com . Use their Houston office. 2. After we apply for and are granted your Foreign Work Permit, we will then apply for your Invitation Letter. We will not need you to provide us any new materials for this step. 3. After receiving your Foreign Work Permit and Invitation letter, we will send you these documents so that you can apply for your Z Visa. To apply for your Z visa you will need to send your passport, foreign work permit and invitation letter to a visa processing agency (you can also walk it into a Chinese consulate or embassy yourself if you live near one; this will save you some money). After receiving your Z visa you will be able to legally enter and begin working in China. Police Department Registration Within 24 hours after arriving in Shenyang, you must register at the police department closest to your apartment. We will accompany you to the police department. Foreign Expert Card and Resident Permit Your foreign expert card and resident permit are the documents you need to work and live long-term in China. After we process these documents for you, you’ll be able to exit and enter China at will. The Z Visa that you process in your home country is only good for one entry and thirty days. To process your foreign expert card and resident permit we’ll need you to bring the following documents: • Passport (with the attached Z Visa). • Notarized physical exam from your home country. • Police department registration form • Foreign expert card • Two passport-style photos Visa Expenses Langston will pay for all visa related expenses after you arrive in Shenyang. We do not pay for visa related expenses incurred in the US. Dress Code Langston’s foreign teachers are asked to dress business casual. That being said, teachers need to be comfortable for children’s classes which demand more activity. Men should stick to button downs, polo’s and sweaters for tops. Slacks, chinos or dark jeans are appropriate for bottoms along with comfortable but professional shoes. Women should maintain a professional appearance. Tops should have, at minimum, capped sleeves with no deep V necks. Hems need to be longer than your fingertips. Again, dark jeans are acceptable, but in any case clothing should be clean and free of tears. If you have a question about the dress code first ask yourself if you would meet the parents of your significant other, go to court, or attend a job interview in the outfit. |
